Complete title listing for UK/US 45s/EPs/LPs.
Mono/Stereo/Alternates
As most of you know, there were myriad differences betwixt mono and stereo releases, and the occasional "alternate take" issue of standard releases.

This website is not going into that level of detail. However, this updated 252 page PDF document gives a comprehensive listing that should sate your curiosity:
The Usenet Guide to Beatles Recording Variations

Who Really Wrote The Songs
John and Paul were quite the song writing team, combining lyrics and music as they went along. However, one of them was usually the primary composer. In this updated page, that primary writer is shown in italics (Lennon-McCartney). This doesn't mean that other guy didn't contribute anything—just the primary idea was by one in particular. And some were true collabs (no italics)—A Day In The Life was two songs by each combined into one. The info is shown only on albums (which covers >95% of the songs).

The count: 73 by John, 69 by Paul, and 17 by both.

The breakdown is from the Beatles Songs: Lennon or McCartney? .

The story of ineptitude and short-sightedness at both Capitol and Vee Jay makes for a very interesting story, especially as told by Little Steven in his Underground Garage "radio" show (Show 984 - The Big Bang ), a show that originally dates to the early 00s.

The story of I Want To Hold Your Hand being played on WWDC-AM and why it was released the day after Christmas, 1963 is hysterical (segment 5)! Check it out and then bookmark his website and go back often.

These Kids'll Buy Anything!

For a company that wanted nothing to do with this group at first, they sure learned how to squeeze every possible penny from the fans.

Case in point: On Nov 23, 1964, Capitol released The Beatles' Story
Fascinating Stuff

T20 (and a Top Ten to boot). This two-record set was nothing more than interviews and very brief music snippets. One of those snippets (Twist And Shout) was recorded live at the Hollywood Bowl and some of those recordings would finally see a release in 1977.

The UK album had a secret bonus after the end of side two. Some could hear it, others never could.

*2022 Update: Turns out that Pepper was rush-released in the UK on Friday, May 26.
Here's the notice from the UK magazine Music & Disc Echo
Disc & Music Echo

(May 27, 1967). Keeping the date as 6/1 as it's "official."

Sanity returns to the record changers.

Starting with Sgt Peppers here and Satanic Majesties there, the track lineups on both American and British albums are the same. Only 4 years! It would take the Kinks until 1969.

Now release dates—fuhgeddaboudit! Closer—sometimes.

End of Beatlemania

Abbey Road was the last record The Beatles made. Let It Be was actually left over bits from the movie project. After that horror show, they decided to be a group again for one final blast. Thanks, boys!

They inspired us and guided us and helped change the world.

Think I'm being too harsh on Capitol?

Here's John from an interview: "And we tried to put it out on Capitol, and Capitol didn't want to put it out. They said, 'This is garbage; we're not going to put it out with her screaming on one side and you doing this sort of live stuff. And they just refused to put it out. But we finally persuaded them that, you know, people might buy this. Of course it went gold the next day." (source )

BBC Recordings
Here for the first time were a selection of The Fab Four on the BBC programme, "Pop Goes The Beatles," recorded in July, Aug, and Sept 1963.

Andrew @ Parlogram Auctions has the story of how the BBC recordings were finally released to the public in 1994 (and another set in 2013). When this bootleg came out, John Lennon wanted a copy! Here's the story as broadcast on WPLJ in 1972 .

Say, didn't The Beatles make a bunch of Fan Club Christmas records ??

Beatlemania In Full Song

I know that this is way past Post 71, but it's never been reissued on CD. So you'll have to track down a real vinyl version (or one of those, ahem, things that has both concerts—complete with KRLA DJ intros!) You could also check The Beatles At Shea Stadium over in the TV section.

What we're talking about is a great example of The Beatles at their raw concert power—trying their best to drown out thousands of screaming teeny-boppers. Culled from two events a year apart, they were specifically recorded by Capitol for an album. But because of the crowd noise, the tapes sat on the shelf for over a dozen years until George Martin was able to take advantage of modern technology and "compose" this resulting live album.

2022 Update: Another track from the Aug 30 '65 concert, Baby's In Black, surfaced on one of the Anthology CD singles in 1995. In 2016, Opie put together a film about the boys touring in the 60s, Eight Days A Week. In conjunction with Ron Howard's film, it was remixed by Giles Martin and four tracks were added.

2022 Update: Andrew @ Parlogram Auctions has put up a great video about this (and the 2016 movie soundtrack).
One interesting item: the tickets on the front are fake and the days on both tickets are wrong (should be Sunday).
The 1965 ticket should be Monday, Aug 30!
