Radio Radio
We've mentioned the power of radio in shaping the music of our "Seasons." But, what did Top 40 or Free-Form radio really sound like? You can thank Ron Jacobs for these great recreations of classic Top 40 radio, from Jumpin' George Oxford at KSAN (San Francisco) to Dr Don Rose at WQXI (Atlanta). The Cruisin' series offered a brief glimpse into what made these DJs so popular and trend-setting. You can hear how radio changed from a personality-driven fun time to a tighly-controlled corporate money machine in just a few years. Mike Royer's fantastic artwork let's you follow along as Eddie & Peg grow up right in front of your very eyes! Look for the cars in the series up thru 1963. Details, man. When Progressive (free-form, or whatever term you want) radio began, it was wide open and fun. Only later did the AOR format come along and destroy the creativity of the on-air talent. The Golden Age of Underground Radio showcases two of California's legendary "cool" DJs and how their shows sounded. Of particular note is the contrast of B Mitchel Reid and his move from fast-patter WMCA in 1963 to the laid-back sound at KMET in the late 60s (he went to Monterey Pop and saw the light). Growing up in the New York area in the 60s, I was lucky to claim WABC & WMCA as my car radio friends, while WNEW-FM was available for all the great new sounds. Want to hear what New York radio was like then? Check out New York Radio Archive for air-checks and print ads from the big stations. Another source of radio air-checks (mostly Top 40) is REELRADIO Reel Top 40 Radio Repository . Search the internets for your favorite radio stations from the past. You'll be surprised at what you find. With audio editing software, you can "unscope" an airheck and have your own time portal. Scott Muni will fill a CD soon! For a quick read into the changes radio went thru over the years, check this section of the New York Radio Archive . Musicradio77 has a most unusual radio show aircheck: WNEW-FM saluting WABC when they changed format to all-talk in 1982. WNEW-FM recognized the important place that WABC meant to their own listeners. The show features WABC jingles, air checks and interviews with Big Dan, Scottso, Bobalu, and Cousin Brucie. This wasn't a quickie handjob, but a two-hour tribute show—fantastic. The internet also offers a way out of corporate radio, as you can now stream radio stations from wherever you want. WFMU in New York is legendary, as is WDST in Woodstock, NY (still independant radio). Wanna hear great music from the 60s to today as put together by a guy who: is a walking encyclodpedia of rock; knows most them; loves old radio & TV; and was a mob consigliere (well, on TV anyway? Then, you must check out Little Steven's Underground Garage . Pick any show. They're all an excellent way to relax for two hours. And, try to hunt down Bob Dylan's Theme Time Radio Hour. 53 outstanding shows from 2006-2008. Amazing radio shows, all themed with music and history from all genres and years. Phenomenal. 2022 Update: Added a link at the bottom to the extremely useful website that is all about radio station surveys. ARSA - The Airheads Radio Survey Archive is where you can spend hours checking out your old station or some of the giants of the 60s like, hmmm, maybe WABC or WMCA. Check it out. If you join (free), you can search by song or artist to see how they did at various stations (mostly US, but some Canada and other countries). |
The original Cruisin' series issued 1956-1962 first, then 1955 and 1963 (in 1972), and ended with 1964-1967 (1973). 1968-1970 were the last batch done. If you want to hear the Cruisin' series, do NOT buy the CD reissues, as they are hacked up versions (due to music rights, as always). Search GEMM or EBay for the vinyl versions. Check out the link at the bottom for the complete Cruisin' story. But, I'm still not sure. Could there be a radio ad that might convince me to buy these swell records? • mmmm, maybe
If you can find it, there is a one-hour demo narrated by Jacobs that plots the history of radio in relation to the audiences and changing times and why the series was created. It has a couple of real airchecks from Alan Freed and BMR (sorry, too big for a blue dot!). Surprisingly, the first series did NOT include BMR (despite Jacobs' glowing highlight of him in the opening of this demo).
Noted in the track listing is what the DJ said the survey number the song was on chart, or if it was an oldie. Just because.
V2.5 Update: No UK releases of these albums.

Not saving the best for last... |
The last three records in the series (released in 1988, fifteen years past prime) were not produced by Ron Jacobs - and it shows. Not only in the production values, but the "hits" were taking a down turn. And lots more "Oldies" are appearing. 1968 is the shortest (just over a half-hour, most others strive for 45 minutes) and just doesn't work. However, Harv Moore used an actual 1969 air check, just recorded an intro and outro (with poor jokes!). You can really tell the difference! The last one (1970) spotlights "larw-n-order" in a political ad that's sorta repeated in the news bulletin that starts side two. Annoyingly, the weather forecast keeps changing. It also crosses over into 1971, as noted. There was one other record issued in this series (besides the sampler). It featured WAMO Pittsburgh's Porky Chedwick trying his best to recreate a 1956 show about thirty-five years later (1993). Too forced, but great sounds! I believe that was the only one that started out life as a CD. |
