at 2648 W Grand Boulevard in Detroit, magic was created during our time frame. 26 Billboard #1 records (86 Top 10s), including something The Beatles never accomplished: The Supremes' six consecutive #1 hits. Mary Wells, Four Tops, Temps, Stevie Wonder, Smokey, and Marvin were stablemates at Hitsville, USA.
The Motown Sound was created by Barry Gordy, utilizing the mostly anonymous Funk Brothers as the house band. With the driving backbone of Benny Benjamin and James Jamerson (drums and bass on most of the hits—#1 example: My Guy), "The Sound Of Young America" roared out of car radios and beach-bound transistor radios in the mid-60s. These hits countered the British Invasion until our own rockers could catch up. That diversity of Beatles/Supremes/Stones/Four Tops/Beach Boys helped mold the music for future generations (and made for great listening, too).
It all but dissolved when Berry moved operations to LA in 1972. The original building is now a museum to the legacy of those great years (see link at bottom).
