20/20 Update

Version 2 - March 15, 2020:

Welcome to the new and improved "Seasons In Your Mind, Version 2."

This website has roots back in 2007, when I started to collect all this information (from my personal record collection—now long gone) and put it into a form that I could access at home (or work) at anytime. That first version was housed in an external hard drive that one day decided that it'd really rather be a doorstop. I rebuilt the website from the salvaged bits and bytes and first set-up this public website about three years ago.

Now it's time for an overhaul. Needed a new "splash screen" (called a landing page these days) and increase the size of the quarterly montage pages to squeeze in more albums links. And other touch-ups.

But the main reason for the update was to fix as many of the album release dates as possible. I've known that quite a few of the album release dates were suspect and have been trying to correct them over the years. Some wrong dates were because of the different dates US and UK albums were released, but reference material seldom made a distinction between them (45Worlds tries the best). Others referenced the Billboard Album Chart debut date as their "official" release dates (not even The Beatles pulled that off). And others had a release date that was later than the actual Billboard chart debut!

The website American Radio History has an extensive collection of music-related magazines, including an almost complete set of Billboard magazines. January and part of February were spent going through each issue to suss out the correct release dates. When it was all crunched, it turns out about 1/3 of the album release dates were incorrect. Some by a few weeks, some by an embarassingly large number. Some never had a release "month." In actuality, none of your big favs (Beatles, Stones, Dead) had major errors and the majority of the fixed dates were for "second- and third-tier" acts. There are two PDFs that document the whys and wheres these changes were made:
2020_Update—Methods: describes why and how the changes were made (includes charts).
2020_Update—Moved: shows were the records were moved to.

Among the other changes that rippled thru the website include:

  • complete update to all of the release dates on the "Big Three" splash features (Peace, Earth, & Attitude) and for all the "cover" sections
  • a side menu to access any specific "season" that's now available on all quarterly pages
  • easier to read info panels
  • most of the Easter Egg pages are still here and all of the links are now hiding in plain sight
  • to those of you who found the secret link to the complete Easter Egg index page—it's gone (but there's a new link hidden somewhere)
  • finally, replaced the redundant "X-The Uknown Months" with Great eXpectations that features artists who were just breaking out in late 1971.

Except for release date corrections, none of the artist/feature pages have changed in size or layout (keepin' em just they way you like em). Replaced some of the album/single graphics—you know, standard running changes.

It's called the "20/20" update for another reason. Just had cataract surgery and my visual acuity went from 20/215 to 20/25. And the colors!

Hope you like the changes and everything works on your desktop/tablet. It's been a month of hard work (still hand coding) to make all the changes, but I like the results. Thanks for reading!
